St. Bartholomew

St. Vincent DePaul Society

Our parish S.V.D.P. Society ministers to the poor and needy of our community. This is our parish's way of reaching out to help in the name of Christ. The Society is funded through personal donations made through the envelope system and at Mass collections.  We regularly collect and distribute canned goods so there are receptacles to deposit your charity at the entrance of the church and parish hall. Thanks to everyone for your help.  For more information call the rectory.

Thanksgiving Baskets for the Needy. Every year, St. Vincent de Paul collects Turkeys, canned goods, assembles and distributes baskets to the needy.  Items needed for this project are: boxed stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, juice, etc.  Every group, club, class and ministry can participate in this worthy cause.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in Paris, France in 1833. A small group of university students, led by Frederic Ozanam, sought a way to bear witness to Gospel values, develop their own spirituality, and relive the suffering of the needy around them. They recognized the responsibility of lay people for ministering to those in need through personal contact. The first U.S. Conference was founded in St. Louis, Missouri in 1845.
Our patron is St. Vincent De Paul, the 17th century French priest who not only ministered to the needy, but also organized religious and lay women and men to develop this ministry.

The philosophy of the society is "No work of charity is foreign to the Society. "Need, not creed" determines who is helped and how. A home visit with the family is made before assistance is given. Funds come from the poor box, special collections, members at meetings, and donations from members of the parish. We provide clients a list of other resources so they can supplement what we are able to provide.

Why should you join? For an opportunity to grow spiritually, mentally, emotionally; for an opportunity to live the Gospel; and for an opportunity to make a difference in many lives.

What do we need? People to help according to their schedules: to make calls, visit clients, determine needs, and provide assistance for the poor and the needy and money to continue this important ministry.
